The carriers not being in PEarl Harbor was luck, but not as last minute as some suggest. IIRC, at least one carrier had been planned for months to be out on exercises (which were used as cover to deliver planes to Wake I believe).
The real luck was that Enterprise was scheduled to return on December 6, but bad weather and high seas slowed her down. She then was supposed to get in about AM on 12/7. She was late, and arrived to see the fleet burning (Halsey immediately refueled and headed out to sea lest he get caught in a third wave). Enterprise's planes in fact were sent ahead (as is customary, you cannot launch planes in port) and were fired up by AA thinking it was a thrid wave.
